Percolating the Dew of Heaven

What are the other books spoken of by Nephi (1 Nephi 13:39)?

38 And it came to pass that I beheld the remnant of the seed of my brethren, and also the book of the Lamb of God, which had proceeded forth from the mouth of the Jew, that it came forth from the Gentiles unto the remnant of the seed of my brethren.

39 And after it had come forth unto them I beheld other books, which came forth by the power of the Lamb, from the Gentiles unto them, unto the convincing of the Gentiles and the remnant of the seed of my brethren, and also the Jews who were scattered upon all the face of the earth, that the records of the prophets and of the twelve apostles of the Lamb are true.

1 Nephi 13:38-39

This passage talks about records that come from the Gentiles unto the ‘remnant of Nephi’s brethren’ and the purpose of these records which is stated as ‘convincing’ both Gentiles and the remnant of Nephi’s brethren.

It is clear who the Gentiles are, but the remnant described here may be less well understood. Nephi doesn’t say his descendants, but the remnant of the seed of Nephi’s brethren. These are descendants of his brothers, the Lamanites. Joseph Smith identified Native Americans as descendants of the Lamanites and sent missionaries to certain Native American tribes.

The first book is referred to as the “book of the lamb of God from the mouth of the Jew”. This is clearly the Bible with all the books from the Old and New Testament. There were early missionaries that brought the Bible native Americans.

After that ‘other books’ come forth. The method by which these records will be made known is by the ‘power of the lamb.’ Power in scriptures means divine power so we would be looking for records given by divine revelation. The Book of Mormon clearly fits this type of divine power as translated through inspiration.

Both the Bible and the Book of Mormon are in reality collections of books, however, the Bible is referred to as a book, singular, and ‘other books’ is plural. There other books that came forth by the power of God if you include the Pearl of Great Price with the books of Moses and Abraham.

There may be other records beyond these such as the Nag Hamandi and Dead Sea Scrolls, however these underwent traditional scholarly labor rather than being translated by the power of God. So we can safely say this prophecy has been fulfilled with the Book of Mormon and Pearl of Great price when they were taken to the American Indians.
